Curly Mom Do's & Donts | Curls of Innocence

CUTE Braided Bun Style!

Hey curlies!

 I wanted to share these pictures just to say how much LOVE braided buns. They're simple and they protect the ends of your braids, or twists, if you do those instead. The patterns of the braid looks pretty all wrapped up in a bun. You can do as many braids as you want and then jazz then up by bunning some of them. It's so cute!

Do Babies' Hair Stay Straight...? + BIRTH Vlog!

The other day when my 5th child Kyanah was born, Syriah was pretty curious about her sister's straight hair. She was stroking it and trying to figure out why it was straight while her other siblings hair was curly/wavy.
We know that a lot of black babies are born with straight hair because of all the mixed up genetics in our bodies and then it eventually starts to curl up. Some take longer than others to curl up, but they still do.
I guess Syriah was just noticing this now whereas two years ago when Jalani was born, she hadn't thought about it yet! His hair as well as all 5 of my kids were born with bone-straight locs that curled up within the first month or two. But the simplest answer to to her question of why babies are born with straight hair and then turn curly was to just say that it depends on your parents. I told her that if the parents have curly hair, then the baby's hair will turn curly, too. And if the parents have straight hair, then their hair will stay straight. As far as the in-betweens, she'll have to figure that out as she gets older because she's only 7 and knows nothing about genetics or even what sex is, for that matter. LOL!
She didn't press the issue, though. She took that answer and went with it, which is what I wanted. Parenting SCORE! Haha!

No Natural Hair Videos? O_o

Hey curly mamas! I did another video on baby hair care. Sorry I haven't been doing many hair videos about MY hair. Truth be told, I haven't been doing too much with my own hair. I'm way too busy with kids and being 32 weeks preggo now. :/
I'll get back to my own real routine at some point, but right now, it'll be mostly the kiddos hair being shown.
Has anyone tried any new products lately? I'm still loving the Taliah Waajid products for the Memorial Day sale. One has actually come very close to running out. Having curly hair can be challenging with all the false claims that these products have.  I'm still sort of a product junkie, but there are certain ingredients that I will never touch.

Mane & Tail Originally For... Horses!?

Hola, curly mamas! I wanted to talk about something random I just found out through a hair group on Facebook.
Someone posted a picture of some Mane & Tail hair products and asked if anyone has ever tried them. I hadn't tried those particular products, but before I could state that, someone else said that M&T was originally designed for... horse hair. O_O
Now, surprisingly, it wasn't that much of a surprise to me because when I was growing up, my mom used M&T on my hair and hers, but I've always wondered why there were horses on the front label and why it was called 'mane and tail'. I don't know; it's one of those weird things that kids probably pick up on more than adults. My mom swore by their shampoos and conditioners especially back in the day. I was shocked to hear that this speculation of mine was actually true. LOL! Check here on their website. http://manentail.com/faqs/
So with that being said, no wonder naturals have had a lot of bad things to say about M&T products. If it was supposed to cater to horses, then it must work well on naturally STRAIGHT hair, not curly hair. Interesting. I suppose the ingredients were safe for humans to use as well as animals when they decided to market this brand towards humans, or maybe not. They're probably very harmful. Who knows? I haven't used any Mane & Tail products in probably over ten/twelve YEARS. Now that I know this is the case, I will NOT be trying them out for my natural hair lol!
You learn something new every day, right? Knowledge is power. ;-)

Welcome, Mothers of Curly Girls!

Welcome, everyone to my natural hair blog! This blog is going to be mostly catered to young girls and their natural curls, hence the name, Curls of Innocence. It's pretty much a division of my little photography business, Colors of Innocence, which I do not have a blog for at the moment. I'm just a stay home mom to a 3 year old girl and a boy who's not quite two yet. I have realized this past year how much I've enjoyed doing my daughter's hair and how I have taken care of it, and would like to share what I have learned.
This blog will be about maintaining the natural curls of our African-American/biracial girls, hairstyle ideas, product reviews, tips, questions, and anything else that comes along with that. Maybe one day, I'll actually come out of my shell and do a video about something hair related, but don't count on it. LOL!
If your daughter's hair is relaxed, this blog may not be for you unless you plan to not continue relaxing it. I have no advice on permed hair and up keeping the properties of permed hair. I do not plan to perm my daughter's hair anytime in this century. I believe that natural is best and that long, healthy hair can only be attained by proper care and natural products. So welcome, mothers, who struggle with your girl's hair care. I will do my best to try and answer questions if you have any for me. Subscribe and enjoy! :-)
