Winter Detangling & Shedding

Hiya guys! I don't have time to update this blog much anymore, but I will still try to do so. I have been recording a bunch of videos lately and also doing other projects in my life. The kids keep me occupied 24-7.
Anyway, I have gotten a kind of new regimen with my hair. I now dry detangle instead of wetting my hair first!

I was doing this as an experiment in the weeks prior to me sticking to it, but now it works so much better for me. So it's back to the basics of using coconut oil in my hair to detangle. It's been working sooo well.
I am still doing the Baka Beautiful NaturalLaxer review. One more week for the last application and then editing time!
My hair color has been working so well! It's not as dry as it was when I first bleached it, only because I started integrating my shea butter back into my routine. Silly me; I should have been doing that. But I've been forgetting, using leave ins without using shea butter on top to seal. That's what has been saving my hair all these years anyway! #backtobasics
So I am still loving this color on me. :)
I've been shedding a little more than usual the last few months, and I think it's because of the normal winter shedding a lot of women get around the winter time. It's annoying, but it's actually getting better every day. Woo hoo! Also, I am making sure that my iron isn't low, because that can cause shedding as well.
I will be back soon with more updates! Stay tuned to YouTube for videos. :D

Bleached Hair Damage + SHEA MOISTURE Haul!

Hiya, guys! I made a quick video showing what happened to my hair after bleaching it.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Y5l-0syfKwA

So, as you can see, my 3B pattern got more loose after using the dye, but I really don't mind it.  I knew what could possibly happen before it did.
But I wanted you guys to see what effects bleaching agents have on my hair.
My hair is also mega dry, and it breaks much easier now! The bleached areas are more fragile and weak, and I can't put too much stress on them. The LOC method, or even the LCO method (even using shea butter on top) does little to hold moisture in my hair now, which is no bueno lol! I have to add a little bit of protein to the moisture every once in a while, although because I am protein sensitive, it's often hard to govern how much of a balance is needed to keep my color from being damaged even more. I am still working to figure that out, but being natural is a journey... a long, exciting one! ;)

Ideas I may implement: I may start adding keratin products to my hair to protect the color... and also these Shea Moisture products that I bought the other day.

I went to Walgreens on a 50% off day. I didn't even know that was the case until I went in, and I bought these three Shea Moisture products. They are wonderful so far. I will have a video done about this soon, and also reviews. Oh, and I finally found that black lipstick that I'd been looking for for ages! Woo hoo! ;) #geekpower
More updates and blog posts coming soon.

The Secret to Poppin Curls & Hair Lessons

Hey, guys! I haven't had much time lately to keep up with my blogs, but anyway, I have something that I'd like to talk about today.
Remember when I said in my New Year's hair goals list that I would go back to the basics of hair care? Well, in my opinion, I had already been doing that to an extent. But now, with 4 kids, I really need to practice that more than ever. So here are some things that I've either learned or re-visited lately.

1. Leaving rinse out conditioner in the hair isn't going to kill it. People have been doing this since forever, and I've always had my own complex issue towards it because I had tried it in the past and always preferred to use a leave in. It just felt better to me. But nowadays, I am experimenting more with my on leave in mixture because it's cheaper and still works. That mixture consists of Suave Naturals conditioner, water, glycerin, and a number of my favorite oils. That, my friends, is the secret to poppin curls. The hold is perfect, too, depending on how you mix it. Haha!

2. The kid's hair doesn't HAVE to be washed every week. Really. I used to be on that every week, and swear by it because they always had their little heads on the floor, full of lint, dust, crumbs, and who knows what else. But now that Jamian's and Symari's hair have gotten so long and Syriah's hair is continuously past her butt, it's a lot of freakin work to make sure that each kid's hair is washed, conditioned, detangled, and styled every single week. And that doesn't include MY hair. Also, little Jalani is 8 months old, but his hair is rapidly growing and accumulating tangles daily. His routine is simple, but it still takes time as his hair gets longer. Here is his hair last month. Simple Baby Hair Care

3. I must deep condition MY hair every week because of the color. Forget the kid's hair! Their hair doesn't need that much conditioning compared to mine. I honestly don't have time anymore. If I do get the time to deep condition Syriah's hair, it'll be like, once a month. Because I have super light areas in my hair now, I need to focus on keeping heavy moisture and light protein treatments in my hair. I also need to get back to using my whipped shea butter. I've been kind of neglecting that lately. #epicfail

4. I MUST stop wearing my hair out so much during the winter! Yes, this is my ultimate weakness. I know the cold air is very damaging to my hair, but so far, whenever I go out somewhere, my hair just has to be out and wild and uncovered. Unless it's raining. Then I pin it down under a hood or something. But initially, I know that I shouldn't have it out and free when it's 30-50 degrees and the wind isn't very favorable towards my hair. I just love my hair big and wild, but I've been getting such terrible tangles and knots from doing this. I know; I fail miserably. I hate the cold weather. Come on, spring! lol

5. Gel is NOT for wintertime. Again, rocking a wash and go during the colder months really wreaks havoc on my hair, and that's probably because of the color. In the past, it didn't seem to do as much damage. But I have to remember, my hair is practically bleached now. Wash & gos with gel during the winter... NOT working for me. That combined with wearing my hair out: epic disaster.  The style only lasts ONE day. That happened to me last week, and I was so pissed off. Plus, I don't own a blow dryer or a diffuser, so it's not like I could have 'set' my hair better before heading out. Nope, it had to air dry all night, and didn't properly do so, either. So, I need to leave wash and gos alone until the weather warms up. Seriously. LOL!

6. Keratin treatments might not be a bad idea for me. I used the last bit if an old ApHogee 2 step treatment that I had for a long time, and it made my colored hair pop and feel less 'crunchy' after washing it. I originally wanted to keep purchasing that stuff even then, but at the time, I couldn't afford to. I didn't see much of a difference in my hair then, but I knew that I'd have to keep trying it. However, now with this drastic color difference, that treatment is like butter to my hair! So instead of paying nearly 8 bucks for that, maybe I'll settle for a cheapie conditioner with keratin in it and see how my hair does.

7. Stop emphasizing styles too much on the kids! We all don't get out too much right now, anyway. I had been working on this for months, because like I said earlier, it's just too much damn work. It's not that serious. I was actually considering straightening Syriah's hair more often this year just so I'll be able to maintain it easier, but I said, nah. That'll do more harm than good and I know this. Me of all people know better. Before I let her hair become damaged due to lack of time, I'll sooner whack off the hair that Jam has and have him start over to take some of the workload off of me. He's a boy. It's not much of a big deal. So, now, both girls get their hair washed and automatically thrown into a few cornbraids or flat twists, or just two braids, period. Little Mari just had these box braids. They lasted for two weeks! Yay.

8. And last of all: Consistency is important, but don't overstress it. If I can afford one product this month that's working well but I can't afford it next month, then so be it. I need to work with what I have and what I know works. Honestly, I miss my Shea Moisture. But until finances pick up and are stable, I need to 'expect the unexpected'. That means the only hair products that I for sure can afford every month are Suave shampoos and conditioners, ONE sulfate free shampoo (right now, I'm using the Cream of Nature Argan Oil one and LOVE it), my cheap deep conditioner, one leave in, and my oils. The oils last almost forever because I buy huge bottle in bulk sometimes, for hot oil treatments, sealing, and mixing my Whipped Curly Butter

So, that's pretty much what I've got as far as hair right now. I'm slacking on my videos a bit because of life being so busy, but I am getting it together. Between me
homeschooling two kids,
changing the other two kid's diapers and also
starting potty training with toddler,
preparing meals,
entertaining kids,
breaking up fights,
cleaning house,
feeding baby,
giving showers/baths,
blogging,
vlogging,
advertising,
photo editing,
video editing,
working out,
talking to hubby after work (and staying up late gaming because that's my only real 'me' time),
and forgetting to eat most times, everybody's hair is completely last on my list of things to do. Ha! Sue me if you like, but it's my hectic life. Hope you guys enjoyed this blog post. How do you manage your time with your kid's hair and yours? Learned any tips and tricks for keeping your curls in line? Please share! Thanks for reading. ;)

Changes and Setbacks?

Hiya, guys! I've been mega busy lately with these kids. Everyone's hair has been slacking a bit, including mine. After I had Jalani, who is 2 months old now, my hair has been suffering from me not taking the best care of it while pregnant because I was so overly tired.
I did not keep up on my deep conditioning, which has made my colored ends suffer. Bleh. Working on repairing that now.

Shrunken hair       Stretched hair (I'm at hip length now!)

Click the picture below for a video on how I touched up my color a few months ago!

The mini braids in this pic are out now though after having them in for 2 weeks.

So, anyway, I have been full swinging into YouTube now. Video editing is super fun, and I have tons of content to record if I think hard enough, so that is where a lot of my free time goes now. It's good in a way because it keeps me from gaming too much lol!  https://www.youtube.com/curlsofinnocence
I have been doing the new 'Failed It or Nailed It' series that I mentioned last post. It's AWESOME!

The breakage that I had experienced in my hair a few months prior has been slowly getting better. I still have a lot of short pieces of hair, but it is growing back fast, and soon, I'll finally be able to blend it in with the rest of my hair again and it won't be sticking up all over the place like flyaways. Yay for progress there!
Syriah's hair has been super dry lately, but I don't have time to work deep conditioning into HER regimen. So I keep doing what I've been doing... protective styling mostly, leave ins every other day, water and AVJ spritz, oil mixture, shea butter on top. I've been slacking on her hair care because baby Lani, homeschooling them, and keeping the house clean has been taking up my time. :/

Symari's hair has definately felt the burn of not having her hair constantly moisturized. She has had severe matted bed hair every time I turn around, no matter what style I put it in! She sleeps super wild, which doesn't help at all

Jam's hair is coming along and growing a lot! I love the new look he has going on. It's fun experimenting with his hair because he has 3C curls, unlike his sister's 3A-3B tresses.
In fact, he currently needs a haircut on the underside of his head again LOL!

That's all for now, folks! Hope you enjoyed this update. Peace out, curly mamas!

Textures and Tones Color Review!

Heya, curly mamas! I have another color review for ya!
As you guys know, I colored my hair in April for the first time. The results weren't exactly what I wanted and the color was beginning to fade, so I wanted to try again this month with a new color... and a cheaper dye. I didn't have 15 bucks this time to spend on getting Shea Moisture again. LOL!

Clairol Textures and Tones worked just as well, if not BETTER than my previous experience. Here is a video on the results.
This video is also on YouTube, but again, I couldn't get it to embed here. Ugh. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GLt5EHjaP4w

Hope you guys enjoy the video and results!

The Pressure to Weave? O_o

Hola, curlies! Today, I want to talk about protective styling. Of course, this is a popular topic among the natural hair community. Everyone has their different ways of doing protective styling, from braids, twists, buns, cornrows, updos, tuck and pins, and several others. Protective styling is simply a method that protects the precious ends of your hair from the outside elements, therefore preventing breakage and dryness. It's very beneficial, and long term usage of PSing (protective styling) helps to retain length to your tresses due to lack of constant manipulation. This is how dreadlocks grow so long; they never have to be touched.
But the problem that I have been facing lately is that some women think that the only way to fully protect their hair is to rock weaves. Everybody and their mamas (literally) are getting weaves as their summer style. A lot of them believe that that is the only way.
Now don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking the weaves. They are cute and stylish, but they are not for me. I'm just not into the fakeness. I believe that if you have the ability to grow your hair, you shouldn't be trying to rock someone else's. If you know me personally, you know that I'm a die-hard natural, and I don't just mean with my hair. I mean with everything I do. I don't wear make-up, mascara, fake nails, fake eyebrows, all that junk. I try to eliminate every unnatural chemical/compound from my life that I possibly can... that's just me. I even make my own toothpaste and deodorant, for crying out loud. Weaves are just not for me. I have never worn one, and never will.

"Never say never!"
Yeah, right; try me. >_>

Anyway, I understand that most people don't have time to do much with their natural hair when they are running out the door to work and what not. I don't have a problem with people wearing weaves sometimes. As long as it isn't something that's too tight on your scalp, then cool. But people who wear weaves back to back as their PS... that's just not cool. Your hair doesn't have any time to breathe and recover. That's still constant manipulation, whether you know it or not. Women fall in love with the length that they retain from wearing weaves, but they can lose that length if there is constant stress on the scalp from heavy fake hair. I just don't like people being pressured with it just because you don't have to really do your hair for like a month or so. Your real hair still needs pampering. I would never go an entire month without washing my hair or at least putting water on it.
At least with a wig, you can just take it off and tend to your real hair. Wigs look more fake, but you can still do your thing so that you don't lose the length of your hair. Weaves are cool, but don't let that make you lose your hair underneath. No need to look cute for two months and end up bald in the process. O_O;

Weave Facts: Pros & Cons
1. Extensions are made up of synthetic fibers that normally aren't very heavy on your head.
2. Women don't have as much time to go to salons as they used to, so often a weave is the way to go.
3. Most weaves are very low-maintenance.
4. You can experiment with weaves, which means you can try that new color that you're afraid to use on your real hair.
5. Weaves made up of real hair look more natural and can be styled as if it were your own hair.
6. You should still shampoo and condition weaves as if were your own hair.
7. Watch your hairline when wearing tight extensions. You can lose your edges over time.
8. Think about the principle of the matter. There are jokes about horses going naked (LOL) because of their tails being snipped, but it's true. There are men in India and other countries, voluntarily chopping off women's ponytails against their will to sell to the US for money. Yes, all because we want to have that 'good hair'. Demoralizing a woman so another woman millions of miles away can look cute with HER hair. That's just so wrong on many, many levels.

So before you try to wear a weave, think about why you really want to. If you know for a fact that you will miss your real hair within two weeks and have to take it down, then don't do it. If you're only getting one because all your friends have cute microbraids or Havana twists and you feel left out, don't do it. It's only peer pressure. Don't let anyone force you into getting a weave if you know that technically, it's not your thing. And don't pressure anyone else into getting one, either. After all, it's not your head. If you love weaves to death, keep doing your thing. Just don't pressure anyone else with it!

Be like Shameless Maya... Do you, boo! ;)

Until next time, curlies!

I DYED My Natural Hair! (Shea Moisture Color Review)

Hola, curly mamas! I dyed my hair for the first time! I used Shea Moisture's new color system in medium golden blonde. My hair is now reddish, or the ends of it are. I thought about doing only the ends because one kit wouldn't cover my whole head, so whatever I had left over, I used at the front of my hair. The details are in this video! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RwLpvsKatQ4

Since Blogger won't let me post the video here at the moment, I just shared the video link with the details.
I LOVE my new hair color! It's not as potent as it would be if I were to color my hair a second time, which is what I plan to do. But it's what I expected it to be.
My hair is BEYOND soft after using this formula. I am sold on this hair dye! Here are a few pics...

The color did not turn my hair blonde, which was awesome because I didn't want it to be anywhere near blonde. LOL! It only lifts two shades from your original hair color. I love the packaging and the fact that they give you shampoo and conditioner to use, and the finishing elixir. Everything in the dyeing process smelled really good, too. And if you know me, I am very big on smells. LOL! Very simple instructions, very simple process.
I have realized one of my mistakes; I didn't comb the color through. I didn't realize that that's what it stated on the instructions because I am so used to not using a comb on my hair. I was just using my fingers to rake through and then twist my hair back up. I should have used a comb to really get it more even. But hey, the first time is always a trial and error process. I know what to do next time to get better results. I am beyond happy anyway. I am no longer afraid of coloring my hair! I am 26 years old and I finally did it! Haha!

Hope you enjoyed the review and the video review. Peace out till later, folks! Let me know your experiences with this hair dye if you've tried it. xD
