Hey, curlies! I just wanted to say Happy Holidays from the Curly Clan!
I honestly haven't been doing anything new to the kid's hair. So that's why I haven't had much to report lately! However, here are picture of Symari's curls after a wash and trim last month, I believe.
Catch us on YouTube or IG, where I post more frequently!
Hey guys! Today, I wanted to talk about something that was a little funny, yet annoying all at once.
Syriah is 9 years old now, as you know if you're following us on Instagram. So she's starting to think that she's grown in some ways. You know how kids are; once they get to that preteen stage, they think the world is against them in every way and they get lazy and they have a million and one excuses as to why they can't accomplish something. (eyeroll)
Lately, Syriah has denied helping me detangle all of this hair she has, and I do not appreciate that.
I let her have it for now, but each time she does this grudgingly, I let her know that if she doesn't start helping me take care of her hair, then I will either cut it or let her grow locs, because I have a ton of hair between her siblings and myself, a ton of housework, and homeschool duties to do as it is, so I greatly need help maintaining her hair. I make sure she understands the importance of this. Having long hair is a HUGE responsibility, and at her age, it's time for her to start learning to care for it.
She used to love helping me take care of it, not so much anymore. That's that laziness talking. LOL
She will get it, though. I'm not worried. She'd better. Or it's just gonna go, snip snip!
Hey, guys, it's been a while again. I know. Life's a whirlwind as usual.
If you're not following me on Instagram (Curls of Innocence), then you probably don't know that I dyed Syriah's hair for her 9th birthday a few weeks ago! She'd been wanting to have pink hair like me, so I said, why not?
I wasn't allowed to dye my hair as a child at any point in time, so I want her to have the freedom that I didn't have.
Now, it didn't come out as pink as I would have liked, considering that I did not want to leave bleach in my child's hair for too long, but it still lightened a considerable amount. However, the dye job came out more reddish brown than pink.
It is still okay, though, for a first time job. She was happy regardless, and it took me a long time to wash and condition her hair, bleach, dye, AND style all in the same day. I was very exhausted by the time I was finished. My back hurt from leaning over the kitchen sink with her multiple times.
Ya'll, I wish I could have recorded that process. But it was too many steps and way too tiring, indeed. LOL!
I used basic bleach powder from the beauty supply store and 30 volume developer. I was afraid that if I used 20 volume, the hair wouldn't have lightened as much because her hair is really dark. So 30 volume worked! I don't think I did a lot of damage doing this. Also, I did the ends because I didn't want to put those chemicals on her scalp and risk a possible allergic reaction of some sorts, nor did I want it in her bloodstream.
If you have any questions as to how I did this, let me know in the comments. I will be more than happy to answer anything. Hope you're having a happy hair day! :)
Hey, curly mamas! Today, I will be demonstrating how I did a very simple protective style in Symari's hair. It was simple because I had just washed and conditioned her hair, and also detangled it while styling. I'm all about my simplicity these days. My hands are very full right now. All the time. lol
I hope that you guys know how to flat twist because you can do so many cute styles doing so. It's the best alternative to cornbraiding, if you'd rather not learn how to do that. I love flat twisting. So much quicker and there's also 2 ways of going about it.
I hope that you guys enjoy the video and think of your own creative ways to do long term styles for your kids. Follow us on Instagramfor DAILY posts on hair, health, & homeschooling! :)
Hey curlies! I created a video for you guys showing how I remove lint from my kid's hair. It's pretty easy and self explanatory, but here it is.
My kids don't know how to keep their heads off the floor, even with me constantly telling them. But even so, they still get a ton of lint. I went through years of trying to wash lint out by simply shampooing, but it never really occurred to me to just pick it out before washing. Doing this on wet hair is NOT fun because the lint sticks to the wet hair and makes it harder to come out. On dry hair, it comes out with a breeze while using a comb.
No tears come out of this, and now when the kid's hair is full of lint from the indentation where their hair ties are, I just use a small comb and comb it out. No problems! Hope you guys enjoyed this.
How do you get lint out of your child's hair? Do you use a brush instead? Comment below! Thanks for reading and watching! Subscribe for more!
Heya, curlies! I am going to talk about treating cradle cap today.
My youngest child is 2 months right now. She has a serious case of cradle cap, or so she used to. My previous child, Jalani, didn't have half as much cradle cap as she did. I don't know what it is, but poor little Kyanah has had a ton of the stinky, white flaky stuff on her little scalp!
I always use coconut oil from birth on my children as a moisturizer for their hair AND body. It's the best. Very silky and smells good, no issues with skin breakouts or anything. So of course, I use it for cradle cap as well.
I made a post on Instagram about not worrying about whether or not to use 'regular' Shea Moistureproducts on your baby. Shea Moisture is supposed to be all natural anyway, so there's no real need to refrain from using it because you don't have the baby version. I always use it on all my kids as babies and they work just fine! No need to go broke using 'specialty' products. ;)
So for the cradle cap, I wash her hair using one of these SM shampoos and I massage really well. I don't use my nails at all, ONLY my finger tips. You don't want to pick the stuff off their scalps and create scabs. It's so tempting for me to pick at it because I HATE dandruff or anything that looks like it because it looks like dirt to me; however, I know that I shouldn't. lol
I wash and rinse like normal. No conditioner needed at this age. Afterwards, I just take a palm full of coconut oil and massage it all over her head. Then at this point, I take one of those tiny baby combs and gently comb her hair out, which is the perfect time to tackle the cradle cap because her hair is wet and the stuff is loosened up. It comes right up easily with the baby comb and it doesn't hurt her. In fact, she loves this process and nearly falls asleep. lol
After combing as much as I can out of her hair, THEN I go in with the baby brush and brush it down, slick it down. I put a hat on her so she can warm up quickly after the bath.
Doing this same process after every bath has significantly decreases her cradle cap issue. Like I said, in the beginning, it was really bad. Now it's almost completely gone! I am so happy about that.
Hopefully, these tips will help you guys, too. I'll probably make a video addressing this also.
What do you about cradle cap? How do you treat it?
Hey curlies! I apologize again for the lack of blog posts. I'm still very pregnant right now; just hit 38 weeks! We've been super busy doing a million errands, taking library trips with the kiddos, and overall, getting ready for the baby. You know how that is if you have multiple kids.
Plus, I've been preparing for the new 'school year' as far as homeschooling, organizing their schoolwork, and planning out what they're going to be learning in their new grades. A lot of things are happening with us at the same time, and it's overwhelming getting everything done while finding time to edit videos!
As far as the kid's hair, I have been trying to maintain protective styles on them for the last two weeks, and for the most part, Jamian is okay now. I gave him a much needed undercut and washed and retwisted his locs. They've been pinned up and out of his face for now.
Symari's blown out hair has served me well! It actually lasts a long time, with way less flyaways and WAY less tangles. It's still soft now after almost 3 weeks, although it needs to be washed. If I had the energy to blow dry it again just to hold me through the remainder of the pregnancy, I sure would because I would barely have to touch her hair. However, Syriah's is more of a concern in that area. Hers has been neglected as usual because it takes the most time and work. I want to blow dry hers also, but it's been mega hot lately. Our air condition at home isn't quite up to par the way it should be, I'd have no problem of it were. Blah. lol
Jalani's little type 4 curls have been easy. Wash and go fro or wash and go mohawks for him or a simple ponytail.
He looks adorable in everything, although he hates getting his hair done on days that aren't wash day.
Follow my Instagram page for DAILY updates on our hair and lives! I will be back updating here more soon. Any questions or comments leave them here or Instagram. Peace out!
Jalani has turned TWO! Woo hoo! Seems like just yesterday, he was just born.
I wanted him to have a new look, so I cut the back and sides of his hair, sort of like an undercut. Here's the video on it... what do you think?
He looks a lot older to me, so handsome! And he looks just like his brother. Awww... I can't get over the cuteness.
My YouTube hiatus only lasted 3 weeks because I was overwhelmed and had to get some things in order, like our water heater situation. That's finally fixed after a little over two months because of the apartment complex. Yay! So I can get back on everyone's hair routine because everyone's hair has been suffering from lack of proper washing. So I am back and I will try to blog here more... again. I know I keep saying that, but if only you guys knew my life, you'd understand! Haha!
Stay tuned for more hair updates and videos!
Hey guys! I've been slacking on this blog again. I just can't keep up with all this social media with 4 kids. I am doing my best while juggling two YouTube channels and other things here at home. Forgive me... that's why I recently made my Twitter strictly personal.
I do keep up on my Instagram, though. I post there a lot, pics of hair, health, and homeschooling things and ideas. Follow me @curlsofinnocence.
I am the hair whisperer of my family, so I am upkeeping six heads of hair. Yes, six. Remember, my hubby has locs now! It's been two months for him so far. I have those updates on IG as well. Yes, this is a lot of work, but I put it on myself to let my boys grow their curls out, loc one of them, and take on the task of maintaining another set of locs. Yikes!
Locs are fairly low maintenance, but not so much in the beginning. LOL! Getting my hubby's super loose textured hair to loc has been a bit of a struggle for me. We're doing it, however.
Anyway, life has been super hectic and busy, as usual. But we're living and doing okay, Vlogging when I can.
For any info on the kid's wash routines or wash days, stay tuned to YouTube. Updating the page on this blog where their old routines are would take a very long time and I'm not sure that I am going to do it anytime soon. LOL! ;)
Today, I washed someone's hair! One of the kids, of course. Can you guess who it was? Can you?
Okay, that was a little lame. LOL! It was Jamian's little curls. His hair was very dirty. In the last video I did of him, I didn't exactly get around to washing his hair yet.
So this was the last video before the one I filmed this afternoon. I wanted to use one of the million sample hair products that I had gotten from the hair show, so I fished around for a shampoo packet. I couldn't find one! I only found the 10 in 1 Shea Moisture renewal shampoo and deep conditioner packet that I was reserving to use on myself. I have tried the deep co before, and I loved it. But the sample packet was way too little to ever use on my hair, even though the shampoo was extremely sudsy on Jam's hair. So I ended up using that shampoo and the deep co on him. It was so soft and wonderful!
Afterwards, I used the Taliah Waajid Easy Herbal Comb Out in his hair as a wash and go style. I have used this stuff in the past, and it's absolutely wonderful for detangling! However, his hair didn't even need much detangling considering that I finger detangled his hair in the shower with the shampoo and the deep co, because it had sooooo much wonderful slip to it. This Shea Moisture line is the bomb, yo! I need to buy some more of this stuff whenever possible. Whenever Walgreens has another 50% of sale. Hehe.
I'll be editing the video of this wash day very soon, so stay tuned for part 2 and more pics and vids! ;)
Peace out, curly mamas!
Oh! And take a peek at my latest homeschooling video if you're interested.
Hey, curly mamas!Do you guys suffer from dandruff? Your kids have it, too? It's not that hard to get rid of it... for good.
My kids and I haven't had dandruff issues in years. We all used to, probably back in about 2012... I believe that was the last time I had issues with it. My youngest child, who is 11 months, has NEVER had dandruff, or even cradle cap thus far. Even my hubby used to have excessive dandruff and doesn't have it any longer!
So, here is what I do to keep dandruff away.. for good,
1. DRINK WATER! I cannot stress that enough. If your body is not hydrated properly, it will manifest itself in your scalp and you'll see those annoying, itchy white flakes that won't go away.
2. WASH weekly! A CLEAN scalp is a happy, non itchy scalp. Bi-weekly may work depending on how your hair is already trained, but if you have lots of dandruff, it is recommended that you wash it weekly.
3. DITCH the sulfate shampoos! Sulfates make your scalp even dryer, which contributes to MORE flakes. No bueno. Want to cleanse completely? Use a mud/clay wash or ACV (apple cider vinegar).
4. OIL your scalp! After you wash and condition your hair, oil your scalp with a natural based oil (EVOO, castor oil, grapeseed oil, avocado oil, etc) before using a leave in. If you don't seal that moisture in, it'll quickly be zapped away by the elements.
5. DEEP CONDITION weekly! Now, I don't have time to do this for all my kids, but I definitely do it to myself. But the kids actually don't need deep conditioning to keep dandruff away, and that's because I have their hair TRAINED. We all guzzle water as our number one drink, and when I moisturize their hair, I use water, then oil, then cream and/or shea butter, otherwise known as the LOC method.
Occasionally, I'll do the opposite... the LCO method. Both ways work well for us!
6. PROTECTIVE STYLING works wonders! Now, I'm not talking about weave, Ya'll know I don't do weave... no shade to those who do; it's just not me, I am talking about doing styles that last for a week. For me, because I'm always in the house, my hair is in twists or braids 90% of the time. If it's not in twists, it's up in a high bun to stretch it and also keep the ends moisturized. I only wear it out when it's moist enough or I'm going somewhere... or I'm about to wash it anyway, so it doesn't matter. lol
For the kids, their hair stays braided, twisted, or coiled up some kind of way, and washed every two weeks. I do moisturizing 'sessions' in between, but maybe only twice a week. Still no dandruff!
*So those are the six things that we've been doing to keep dandruff at bay. Symari and Jalani have never had dandruff at all, and that's because I learned from the two oldest. Woo hoo!
I hope you guys take my advice and apply it to yourself or your kids if you're having dandruff trouble. These things work!
Hiya, curly mamas! It's been forever. Uber busy once again. I have a review of the Baka Beautiful products coming soon. It's a 'natural relaxer', and no, it's not one of those freakish gimmicks to make you buy the product, claiming to 'fix' your natural texture. It's all natural and clay based. But it's a kit, with a process that I have to try within about 3-4 weeks, so the review won't be ready until later on this month. I'll do a video about it and probably do a detailed blog post as well. So stay tuned!
By the way, my mini braids are out! ;-)
They lasted for two weeks, and then my scalp was beyond itchy. So I wet my hair with my aloe vera juice and water mixture and added LOADS of coconut oil to the braids. Taking them out was annoying, but it was a breeze. Three hours compared to the five hours that it took to install them. O_O
Stay tuned to YouTube for the Baka Beautiful review coming soon enough. ;)
