The Secret to Poppin Curls & Hair Lessons

Hey, guys! I haven't had much time lately to keep up with my blogs, but anyway, I have something that I'd like to talk about today.
Remember when I said in my New Year's hair goals list that I would go back to the basics of hair care? Well, in my opinion, I had already been doing that to an extent. But now, with 4 kids, I really need to practice that more than ever. So here are some things that I've either learned or re-visited lately.

1. Leaving rinse out conditioner in the hair isn't going to kill it. People have been doing this since forever, and I've always had my own complex issue towards it because I had tried it in the past and always preferred to use a leave in. It just felt better to me. But nowadays, I am experimenting more with my on leave in mixture because it's cheaper and still works. That mixture consists of Suave Naturals conditioner, water, glycerin, and a number of my favorite oils. That, my friends, is the secret to poppin curls. The hold is perfect, too, depending on how you mix it. Haha!

2. The kid's hair doesn't HAVE to be washed every week. Really. I used to be on that every week, and swear by it because they always had their little heads on the floor, full of lint, dust, crumbs, and who knows what else. But now that Jamian's and Symari's hair have gotten so long and Syriah's hair is continuously past her butt, it's a lot of freakin work to make sure that each kid's hair is washed, conditioned, detangled, and styled every single week. And that doesn't include MY hair. Also, little Jalani is 8 months old, but his hair is rapidly growing and accumulating tangles daily. His routine is simple, but it still takes time as his hair gets longer. Here is his hair last month. Simple Baby Hair Care

3. I must deep condition MY hair every week because of the color. Forget the kid's hair! Their hair doesn't need that much conditioning compared to mine. I honestly don't have time anymore. If I do get the time to deep condition Syriah's hair, it'll be like, once a month. Because I have super light areas in my hair now, I need to focus on keeping heavy moisture and light protein treatments in my hair. I also need to get back to using my whipped shea butter. I've been kind of neglecting that lately. #epicfail

4. I MUST stop wearing my hair out so much during the winter! Yes, this is my ultimate weakness. I know the cold air is very damaging to my hair, but so far, whenever I go out somewhere, my hair just has to be out and wild and uncovered. Unless it's raining. Then I pin it down under a hood or something. But initially, I know that I shouldn't have it out and free when it's 30-50 degrees and the wind isn't very favorable towards my hair. I just love my hair big and wild, but I've been getting such terrible tangles and knots from doing this. I know; I fail miserably. I hate the cold weather. Come on, spring! lol

5. Gel is NOT for wintertime. Again, rocking a wash and go during the colder months really wreaks havoc on my hair, and that's probably because of the color. In the past, it didn't seem to do as much damage. But I have to remember, my hair is practically bleached now. Wash & gos with gel during the winter... NOT working for me. That combined with wearing my hair out: epic disaster.  The style only lasts ONE day. That happened to me last week, and I was so pissed off. Plus, I don't own a blow dryer or a diffuser, so it's not like I could have 'set' my hair better before heading out. Nope, it had to air dry all night, and didn't properly do so, either. So, I need to leave wash and gos alone until the weather warms up. Seriously. LOL!

6. Keratin treatments might not be a bad idea for me. I used the last bit if an old ApHogee 2 step treatment that I had for a long time, and it made my colored hair pop and feel less 'crunchy' after washing it. I originally wanted to keep purchasing that stuff even then, but at the time, I couldn't afford to. I didn't see much of a difference in my hair then, but I knew that I'd have to keep trying it. However, now with this drastic color difference, that treatment is like butter to my hair! So instead of paying nearly 8 bucks for that, maybe I'll settle for a cheapie conditioner with keratin in it and see how my hair does.

7. Stop emphasizing styles too much on the kids! We all don't get out too much right now, anyway. I had been working on this for months, because like I said earlier, it's just too much damn work. It's not that serious. I was actually considering straightening Syriah's hair more often this year just so I'll be able to maintain it easier, but I said, nah. That'll do more harm than good and I know this. Me of all people know better. Before I let her hair become damaged due to lack of time, I'll sooner whack off the hair that Jam has and have him start over to take some of the workload off of me. He's a boy. It's not much of a big deal. So, now, both girls get their hair washed and automatically thrown into a few cornbraids or flat twists, or just two braids, period. Little Mari just had these box braids. They lasted for two weeks! Yay.

8. And last of all: Consistency is important, but don't overstress it. If I can afford one product this month that's working well but I can't afford it next month, then so be it. I need to work with what I have and what I know works. Honestly, I miss my Shea Moisture. But until finances pick up and are stable, I need to 'expect the unexpected'. That means the only hair products that I for sure can afford every month are Suave shampoos and conditioners, ONE sulfate free shampoo (right now, I'm using the Cream of Nature Argan Oil one and LOVE it), my cheap deep conditioner, one leave in, and my oils. The oils last almost forever because I buy huge bottle in bulk sometimes, for hot oil treatments, sealing, and mixing my Whipped Curly Butter

So, that's pretty much what I've got as far as hair right now. I'm slacking on my videos a bit because of life being so busy, but I am getting it together. Between me
homeschooling two kids,
changing the other two kid's diapers and also
starting potty training with toddler,
preparing meals,
entertaining kids,
breaking up fights,
cleaning house,
feeding baby,
giving showers/baths,
blogging,
vlogging,
advertising,
photo editing,
video editing,
working out,
talking to hubby after work (and staying up late gaming because that's my only real 'me' time),
and forgetting to eat most times, everybody's hair is completely last on my list of things to do. Ha! Sue me if you like, but it's my hectic life. Hope you guys enjoyed this blog post. How do you manage your time with your kid's hair and yours? Learned any tips and tricks for keeping your curls in line? Please share! Thanks for reading. ;)

Shampoo / Conditioner Bottle Ratio? + Vlogtember Vlogs

Hiya, curlies!

I got some new products a few days ago. Nothing special, just some random gels at Walmart that I have yet to try.

I have already tried the Olive oil cholesterol stuff and the Shea Moisture gel before. But I haven't used that SM gel in over a year, so I decided to try it again. Last few times that I have tried it, it didn't work very well for me. It left my hair sticky, slimy, and undefined! So I wanted to try it again, just to see if the reason it didn't work for me was because it has coconut oil in it (protein sensitivity) or I was simply using it wrong... again. lol
The V05 stuff is so cheap that I've been using it a lot lately on the entire family.  Of course, the conditioner bottles run out so much faster than the shampoo bottles!
The ratio is like; for every one bottle of shampoo = three bottles of conditioner. -______- #naturalhairproblems
Those two other gels I have never tried. People rave about that ORS Lock & Twist gel, and so far, I see why. It worked wonderfully on Jamian's hair! Finger coils for the WIN! #curlsofinnocence

I will be reviewing this stuff on my hair very soon, as well as the other gel.  These aren't natural gels, but I wanted to try them anyway. I'm not that much of a #ingredientNazi anymore. I use what works!
Enjoy the videos and peace out till later!

Pre-Pooing For Little GIrls

Heya, curlies! I have had a lot of changes to my hair and my kid's hair recently, but the one thing that remains the same is the pre-pooing part. I still pre-poo our hair with coconut oil.  No matter the hair type, a lot of people swear by coconut oil for pre-pooing and detangling. Ya'll know I can't leave the stuff in my hair... don't need protein overload! lol
I even use coconut oil on my 3 month old's hair after his baths! It's all he needs right now. He has a natural mohawk. O_O

Recently, I tried something new with Syriah's hair, though. I have seen other vloggers do this and I have yet to try it on mine. I used coconut oil AND conditioner to pre-poo her hair! And this time, I put a plastic bag on to really moisturize it. Felt so good and moist when I washed her hair afterwards. The detangling process wasn't hard, either because I had previously finger detangled.
As you can see in the video, I used a VO5 conditioner. I have used this in the past and it has never failed me. It's cheap and it works! Plus, it has no silicones, and although naturals SWEAR by silicone usage for slip, I don't like to use them a lot. Eventually, my hair ends up feeling horribly coated.
That's also my reason for not co-washing with conditioner that is not meant for washing lol! I do, however, LOVE the As I Am Coconut Cowash. I am still using the same one from my CurlMart haul from a few months ago, only because I have been either washing with my trusty Shea Moisture raw shea butter shampoo or my Dr. Woods liquid black soap, which is WONDERFUL as a shampoo and a conditioner combined!
We've been re-purchasing it for about 4 months now.

Other new changes that I've made, I've cut a few inches off my hair about 3 weeks ago! Watch this video to find out why.
Because of budget changes, I've had to cut back on a few things. So we are currently using the Cantu repair cream leave in. It's okay. It's cheap and it works, but I have to be careful. Overuse of that stuff will cause my hair to feel coated as it has done in the past. But for now, it works.

Even though I cut a good chunk off of my hair, it doesn't seem like I cut much off. My hair is still longer than I expected it to be after cutting. But my hair does grow really fast (without vitamins), so yay for that! Plus, my 'holy grail' oil always helps with growth and I still use that religiously.

So, that's my update for today. I will try to come back and post more often. I have been slacking on that because of me doing more YouTube videos now. Video editing is soooo fun, but it can be time consuming! I'm trying to get to where I can do three videos a week with ease... yeah. Not easy with four kids.
But I do homeschooling videos now as well, so I record that, too. Beauty & brains for the win! xD
Peace out till later, folks! Join the website so you won't miss out on updates. SUBSCRIBE to the YouTube channel for more vids, and thanks for reading! ;)

Aloe Vera Juice for Natural Hair

Happy New Year to all you curly mamas! Woo hoo! Hope that everyone fulfills their hair goals this year as well as their other goals.

I wanted to talk about aloe vera juice and how I've been using it on my hair for the past two weeks or so. I've been using it only on wash day, after I wash, condition, and rinse. I apply AVJ on my sections, squeeze out the excess liquid, then apply my usual oil mixture to my hair and scalp. Then I proceed with de-tangling, whether or not I use a leave in moisturizer, then braid/twist it up.
First and foremost, I wanted to try using AVJ on my hair because I have heard a ton of great things about it. I always want to go as natural as possible with my hair and body health, so I wanted to give it a try. The day I bought the AVJ from Walmart, there was only one kind left... the one that had extra berry juices in it. Apparently, other people have caught onto the benefits of it and bought out the plain one. I scanned the ingredients for anything foreign, saw nothing, then bought it, the Fruit of the Earth brand.
Aloe vera juice is great for a lot of things, one being balancing the pH in our hair, just like apple cider vinegar does. Here's one article about the benefits of AVJ: http://blackgirllonghair.com/2012/01/4-hair-benefits-of-aloe-vera/
So I am doing it the way I mentioned above, for the last two weeks. I've already seen a difference in my hair. It's mega soft with my oil mixture on top. Now AVJ is an astringent, so it is used as a cleanser as well as other things like skin care, so it has a really squeaky feeling when you smooth it in your hair. It's kind of like the feeling that you get if you totally strip your hair of all dirt and grime and are left with a squeaky clean head. But it moisturizes at the same time. It also feels good because AVJ has to be refrigerated, so when I pour it into my hair with my dispenser bottle, the coldness feels awesome on my scalp lol!
I don't rinse the AVJ out; I leave it in, massage it into my scalp and my whole head. My oil mixture (see here http://curlsofinnocence.blogspot.com/p/my-hair-regimen.html) goes on top and then I de-tangle, then twist and braid the sections. For stretch, I put the twists into one big fat bun, and even though it takes longer for my hair to air dry that way, my hair is stretched and extra soft when it does dry.
Last night, I deep conditioned my hair, rinsed it out after two hours, and then tried using the AVJ the same way. Awesome results again! My hair is softer because of the DC/light protein treatment that I use. Don't even have to use a moisturizer with this stuff. I've seen a change... my hair appears a little stronger and silkier.
So, I will be sticking to this for as long as it works. ;)
How do you guys use AVJ if you do use it? What changes have you seen?

Peace out and Happy New Year again!

Oil Rinsing?

Hiya, guys! I wanted to talk about something I have yet to try on my natural hair... oil rinsing. I have seen others do it, though. I started thinking about it after seeing Fusion of Cultures on YouTube doing it in her latest wash day video. Then I remembered that I had never tried this!
The process of oil rinsing is usually done after the hair has been shampooed and conditioned. The purpose is to give the hair shine and more manageability. If you use cool/cold water to seal the oil in when rinsing it, the cuticles will close and the oil's properties will remain in your hair even after you've washed out the oil.
Apparently, it's a popular method for a lot of naturals. I use lots of oils in my hair anyway... I pre-poo with oils, I add oils to my scalp right after washing, and I add oils to my hair throughout the week, especially if I hadn't found the time to deep condition that week. But the reason I thought about trying an oil rinse is so that maybe I won't have to re-apply oils on my scalp after coming out of the shower; I can just go right to using a leave in with shea butter on top. I want to see if my hair will have a shine to it as well after sealing in the oils with cool water.
So perhaps, on my next wash day, I'll bring my oil spray bottle in the shower with me and rinse the oils out after washing and conditioning. Can't hurt to try! I just have to make sure not to slip and bust my behind on a slippery, oily tub floor. LOL!
Have you guys tried this method? How long do you leave the oils soaking in your hair? Have you noticed any benefits? Tell me! Comment below or on Facebook. https://www.facebook.com/pages/Curls-of-Innocence/256662627753918?ref=hl

Peace out till later, curlies!
P.S.: I have been slacking on my videos lately... lots going on in life right now. I will get back on it soon! ;)

Hair Show Goodies & Shea Moisture Color?

Morning, curly mamas! I really enjoyed the hair show this month. There was a brunch first, where Coco Natural's (Natural Hair Freedom) meet up group met to eat and enjoy hair talk from a few YouTube hair celebrities. The restaurant was packed; there was at least 50 naturalistas in there. They even ran out of chairs! After that, we all went to the hair show in our separate cars.
Syriah was my little marketer, even though at first, that wasn't my intention. I brought business cards to give out, and I just randomly thought of the idea to have her give them out to the ladies instead of me. You know how it is; it's hard to say no to a cute little child with gorgeous hair. Not to brag, but hey.
Syriah did a great job of handing out the cards. She passed out over 30 of them to anyone who paid her any attention, and even other strangers without me reminding her. She would insist that everyone have a card. She had a ball there.
I even met Afrikanhairgod! :)
So I only had a small amount of money to spend this time (bummer), but I went to the hair show with the sole purpose of getting some Shea Moisture hair color. Since I hadn't had a chance to get to Target, I knew that they'd have some for sale at the show. Because of the brunch, I was afraid that they'd be sold out because the brunch lasted from 10:00-12:00, and we didn't get to the convention center until 1:00 because everyone was standing around, chatting. This color system is new and popular, and only sold in Target as of now. But they weren't sold out. I was able to get two Shea Moisture things, the Yucca and Baobab Anti Breakage Masque and some hair color! I was ecstatic. It was 10 bucks, 5 bucks less that it would have been at Target.
I was skeptical as to which color to get, because I want either a medium brownish color or a slight reddish color. I was leaning more towards the brown, so I talked with the Shea Moisture consultants and they suggested this color. I was scared because it said blonde, but she informed me (and every other worried woman) that this color would not make their hair blonde unless their hair was already light brown from the start. This color only lifts your hair about two shades lighter from the color it started with. So I said, okay. I'll give it a try.
Then she told me that because of my hair length, I'd have to get TWO boxes of color, and that it would be 20 bucks. I was like awww maaaan... I didn't have twenty bucks. I'd already bought one thing and I had ten bucks left to spend. I didn't think that I'd need two because I have a lot of hair. So I got this one anyway and decided that I'd just dye the ends of my hair only... maybe. I'll have to see how much is really in the bottle.
I got tons of samples there, too. Click the link for the other pictures that I took. https://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.447479738672205.1073741825.256662627753918&type=1

Shea Moisture Anti Breakage Masque Review
I have already tried the Anti Breakage Masque yesterday as a deep conditioner. I left it in for an hour with a bag over my head, and when I washed it out, it was absolutely AWESOME! I can honestly say that this is the best conditioner/deep conditioner that I have ever purchased. I am in LOVE with it. It gives my hair the blow-dried look and softness without blow drying, and it's also a protein treatment. I haven't put anything else in my hair since the deep conditioner, and my hair stayed baby soft and de-tangled in twists all night and dried. The reason I didn't apply anything else in my head is obvious; because I am going to try the color system today and I want my hair to be completely free of product. :-)
So, my three toddlers are going down for a nap in about thirty minutes, and then there will be peace and quiet for me to to do my thing. I need absolute concentration when doing something like this for the first time. I have already done the skin test... no allergic reactions. Hooray! I'm counting down the minutes until I can finally use some color and give myself a whole new look!
Wish me luck, guys. You know I'll be posting pics if this comes out right. ;-)
Peace out till later, folks!

Merry Christmas & a New Shampoo!

Merry Christmas, everyone! I have a new shampoo! Now before you get all excited, this isn't a giveaway or anything. One day, those will come when I can afford it. LOL! But I got this two days ago from Walmart and I am in love with it.
It's another Shea Moisture shampoo, but I like it better than the one I was previously using. I couldn't wait to try it, so on Sunday, which I have officially named as my wash day, I tried it. It was absolutely awesome!
Truthfully, this stuff didn't even feel like a shampoo. It was so silky, it felt like a conditioner, like I was co-washing my hair instead of actually 'sudsing' it up. As usual there are all natural ingredients in it, and no sulfates! I'm so in love with this shampoo.
Wish that I had the money to get the conditioner to try along with it, which was also $9.99. Some people have said that the conditioner doesn't do as good of a job as the shampoo does, but I want to see for myself one day.
So I washed my hair in two sections, towel blotted it, and applied my castor oil and grape seed oil mixture on my scalp and ends. Then I used some of my Tresemme conditioner (which is almost gone) in my hair as a leave in and de-tangled with my wide toothed comb. I don't usually do this, but it has been doing wonders for my hair's epic dryness lately. I did my usual 6-8 twists in and tied it up to in a scarf to air dry.
The next day, Christmas Eve, I spritzed it with water, finger de-tangled it, and applied my whipped shea butter. Replaced the fat twists with braids so I could get the roots pinned up and not knotted together like they always do after one day of wearing fat twists. The JBCO has been making my roots so much thicker, so when I do twists, after one day, not only is there a bunch of frizz near on the top of my head, but the roots sometimes get tangled within one another. Sometimes braiding is better, even though it takes longer. But it creates a lot of stretch!
As of now, we're not going anywhere for Christmas, but I'm still going to play around with my hair and Syriah's and create some 'holiday style' just for fun.  xD

Until next time...
Happy Holidays, curly mamas!
